Our Approach

Every ingredient should have a reason to exist.

We begin with the purpose of the product, consider the complete formula, and explain our choices without asking one ingredient to carry the entire story.

The question behind the work

Why is this ingredient here?

A formula begins with a need, not a list of fashionable ingredients.

Acorn & Ash selects ingredients for the function they perform in a specific product. A botanical ingredient is not automatically better because it is familiar, and a technical name is not automatically a reason for concern.

See how we document the work

Before an ingredient earns a place

Five questions keep the decision grounded.

The answers must make sense in the finished product, not only in an ingredient description.

  1. What specific function does this ingredient serve?
  2. What problem or performance need does it address?
  3. Does it meaningfully improve performance, stability, texture, application, or user experience?
  4. Could the same purpose be accomplished with a simpler or more suitable ingredient?
  5. Can we clearly explain why it is included?

The complete formula

Function before fashion.

The amount, combination, process, packaging, and intended use all shape the finished experience.

Our current products are formulated without added fragrance, essential oils, or dyes. This is a deliberate choice for the current formulas, not a slogan about every possible ingredient or every future product.

Consumer feedback can help us understand experience and usability. It is not clinical evidence, and we do not present it that way.

Start with purpose

Define what the product is meant to do before choosing what goes into it.

Consider the whole

Judge an ingredient by its role in the complete formula, not by familiarity or fashion.

Use evidence carefully

Keep ingredient education separate from finished-product promises.

State the limits

Explain what a cosmetic can do, what it cannot do, and how it should be used.

Explore the details

Follow the purpose from ingredient to product.
